I like the idea of teaching cursive as an elective. My daughter's handwriting is really poor (it looks like spiders with palsey or something), and I know she struggled with cursive.
It seems to me the important things to teach are how to think and how to translate those thoughts into a form of communication that can be readily understood by others.
Having said that, I think cursive will certainly have a place for a long time to come, just as decorative fonts are used for special occasions or for contrast.
